About Me

Lisa Maslar, LCSW-C

I am a licensed clinical social worker who graduated from UMBC, double majoring in Social Work and Sociology. I received my masters from the University of Maryland, Baltimore with a clinical concentration and sub-specialization in addictions treatment. During my training, I had the opportunity to work with prisoners, the homeless population, and at-risk adolescents.  I am a certified trauma specialist, receiving my training from the Institute of Advanced Psychotherapy Training and Education, Inc.  I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy through Kase & Company which is EMDRIA approved.

My Story

Facetune_18-03-2025-15-28-34.heic

How it started

I started on this path to mental health therapy when I volunteered to answer the hotline for my local domestic violence shelter.  There were several graduate school interns from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.  Getting to know them and the work they were doing fascinated me and I knew instantly that I wanted to pursue that path as well. The next thing I knew, I was enrolled at the local community college to get some basic requirements completed and then I was off to the races!

The learning curve

My first internship was working with at-risk teens in an after-school program.  Their energy and unique challenges of being raised in the age of Social Media were eye opening and compelling.  My second internship was at Beans and Bread, a homeless outreach center in one of the poorest neighborhoods in inner city Baltimore.  Their ability to show gratitude in the bleakest of times was awe inspiring. My final internship was as a case manager at Jessup Correctional Institute, working with incarcerated men and women.  I sadly saw how our system is not set up to handle the mentally ill in prison, often making their mental health worse.  But, I knew that I was not going to give up .

How it's going

A big part of my professional development was recognizing that trauma is so pervasive and is often a contributing factor to other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and substance use disorders.  This led me to pursue additional training in trauma treatment – one of the best decisions I have made.  We are all the “walking wounded” in some way – as life often has its share of painful experiences and disappointments.  It is also full of hope and personal growth – which I bring to my practice.  Every day.
